Every artwork in my studio has its own story – and it always begins with a blank canvas and a spark of inspiration.
Sometimes the idea comes during a walk in nature – the curve of a leaf, the play of sunlight on water. Other times, it’s born from the energy of the city, the shapes of architecture, or the movement of people. These moments become sketches, colour palettes, and eventually, finished works.
Materials matter and I choose them for their quality, texture, and the way they interact with light over time. Paint, canvas, and even the brushstroke style are selected to bring out depth and emotion. To those starting out in their artistic journey, I don’t use expensive paints during the ‘test’ process. I use Hobby Crafts own pain to get the theory and when I’m happy, I move to my favourite acrylic paints which are from Pebeo, Amsterdam or Liquitex.
I found that after years of practice and mistakes on using cheaper paints in final pieces, they crack or the consistency is lacking. BUT for test purposes, they are worth it.
The process isn’t always smooth – some pieces evolve over weeks as I experiment, change direction, and discover new possibilities. That’s part of the joy. And because we create one-of-a-kind pieces, no two works will ever be the same.
Having said that, I am very much in the school of having to see ‘something’ in the artwork fairly quickly. If I don’t, then that piece may become something completely different!! A large paintbrush and whitewash to change the canvas completely..
Once I do find my flow, the final piece makes those moments of doubt all worth while.
When you take home something from the studio, you’re not just getting a painting – you’re bringing a part of that journey into your own space.
